130 km of coast line with beaches, pinewoods and rocky shores are broken by numerous coves that are now wide safe tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto, Talamone, Maremma also boasts an interesting artistic and cultural heritage, covering an extensive historical period. Maremma, like saying pinewood, beach, rocky coasts and wild areas. The inland, with a delicate contrast, striking woody hills, declivous marked by century old olive groves, wine yards of prestigious grapes. A land that extends as far as the district of Grosseto to the border of Lazio, testifies the capacity of man to live from remote times, in peace and harmony with Nature. The landscape is rich of colours. the green of the woods and the blue of the sea, the red of poppies and yellow of sunflowers. There remains a lot of signs of the human presence in time, from Prehistorical ruins to Etrurian and Roman ruins, signs of the Middle Age up to recent history, almost to recall us in a clean surroundings to the alive reality of our past. A land to discover.

Most of the territory of Grosseto cornes within the Tuscan Maremma: 130 km of coast with alternating beaches and rocky shores, broken by numerous coves that are now wide, safe tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Talamone, Porto S. Stefano, Porto Ercole, Cala Galera. The Island of Giglio also belongs to the territory. In relatively recent years the whole of the Maremma coast has achieved a high degree of tourist development, with top class accommodation and complementary services, whilst managing to perfectly preserve its own natural characteristics. The natural heritage is an extremely influential factor in the general holiday package offered by this territory, and particularly Monte Amiata and the protected areas of the Maremma Natural Park, the lake of Burano (WWF wildlife reserve) and Feniglia. The Maremma also boasts an extremely interesting artistic and cultural heritage, covering an extensive historical period. The most farmous and richly illustrated element of this is Etruscan art, examples of which are found across virtually the whole of the territory: in the archaeological museums of Grosseto and Massa Marittima, in Vetulonia, Sovana, Roselle, Ansedonia-Cosa and other centres. There are also extremely significant examples of medieval art in this area, such as Massa Marittima, which was a wealthy commune in the 13th century, and Pitigliano which also boasts Renaissance monuments such as the Orsini Palace modified in 1500 by Giuliano da Sangallo. Folk traditions and the memory of characters from legends and tales handed down through the generations are still very much alive today: Tiburzi the brigand, Red Beard the pirate and Davide Lazzeretti, the founder of the “Giurisdavidica” church. The “buttero” (herdsman) is a living reminder of times past, following the herds on horseback in areas where modern farming methods cannot be used. Folk events include: the Balestro del Girifalco (archery), held twice yearly at Massa Marittima, and the Palio Marinaro (Sea Palio) held at Porto S. Stefano in August. The thermal baths are the finishing touch to the holiday package offered by this territory: Saturnia, with its picturesque warm-water waterfall, at 37.5°C; Petriolo; Bagnolo and Bagnore on the slopes of Monte Amiata.

Maremma is a land characterized by a great variety of ambients: tirrenic coast, fluvial valleys, hilly hinterland. The absence of the transformations induced by industrial installations has left almost untouched the naturalistic patrimony naturalistic patrimony , constituted by landscapes, vegetation and fauna partly rich in the damp areas and in the woody areas.

The coast is partly constituted by sandy litorals, near these stand out the Argentario promontory and the Punta Ala one. A part of the coast, from Bocca d’Ombrone to Talamone, constitutes the Maremma Natural Park, where the woods are still a natural habitat for wild boars and bucks. Frame of the coast are the islands of Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo, the last one a sheltered area.

The chief town is Grosseto, with medieval origins, in which the absence of a rich artistic patrimony like other towns of Tuscany is compensated by a good rhythm of life. Etruscan and Roman installations in the surrounding area have left remarkable tracks in many places, in particular in Roselle; here the archeological excavations have brought to light the remains of three superposed towns: the Etruscan one, the roman one and the medieval one.

Inside the Archaeological Museum of the Maremma, in Grosseto, is preserved a great part of recovered objects from the excavations. Historical and artistic evidences from successive ages, partly medieval ones, are for all the hinterland, but concentrated in a small town of glorious traditions: Massa Marittima.

People from Maremma have preserved their popular culture, inheritance from a society of shepherds and farmers; today this culture is object of studies and research for the Archives of the Popular Traditions of Grosseto.

La Maremma is more than just another geographical definition, it represents a way of life, a link with the past and a hope for the future. Just as the Camargue, the Yorkshire Moors, the Saxon Heide and the Hungarian Puszta, the Maremma is an oasis for wild life and a haven for stress plagued city dwellers. This, the most southern tip of Tuscany, offers a distinct way of holiday making, “far from the madding crowd”, yet so near to Italy’s capitals of cultural heritage. A mere 70 kilometres from Siena, 152 from Florence and 188 from Rome, Grosseto itself offers an abundance in treasures ranging from the Etruscan ruins to the Renaissance works of art commissioned by the Medici’s

Southeast of Florence and Chianti lies a vast golden sea of wheat called Maremma. Drive through these waves of grain and you’ll see cowboys in fedoras riding big sturdy maremmano horses herding long-horned maremmano bulls. Drive east and you’ll reach Castel del Piano, center of a dozen well-preserved medieval towns where the Epiphany, a costumed outdoor pageant heralding the arrival of the Three Kings, is still performed by townspeople on the evening of January 5th. Drive west and you’ll reach the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, where a causeway leads you to the promontory called Argentario, site of l’Oasi della laguna, one of the few bird refuges in this avid bird-hunting country. Elegant water fowl come here from all over Europe and so can you, from September 1 to April 30. A few miles away in the town of Ansedonia, a procession of gaily lit boats celebrates the miraculous finding of a religious relic every May 11th. North of here is the capital city, Grosseto, a beautifully restored 16th-century walled town that was greatly enhanced by Medici family patronage. Farther inland are the warm sulphurous waters of Saturnia, which legend claims as the first town ever built in Italy (by no less illustrious a founder than the mother of Saturn). Etruscan tombs abound in this area, centred in the woods around the semi-derelict town of Sovana. Also well worth visiting are Massa Marittima, Follonica, Magliano (and the nearby ruins of the Romanesque monastery of San Bruzio), the seaside village of Capalbio and the Etruscan ruins of Vetulonia.
